“Honey” Guitar Tutorial – Basic Fingerstyle Song With Interesting Chord Shapes | Kehlani

Tutorials
Hey everyone!

In this lesson I’m going to teach you how to play “Honey” by Kehlani. This is a simple fingerstyle tune that uses some interesting chord shapes and a pretty basic fingerpicking pattern.

For help with fingerstyle check out my latest course, Fingerpicking Mastery:

First of all, we need to put a CAPO on the 1st fret. From there, the lesson begins with a few chord shapes: Em7, A7sus4 and Dmaj7. Yeah… they’re not your usual, basic chord shapes, but they’re still very simple, requiring just a couple fingers.

Once we hammer out those 3 chords, we practice playing them with the picking pattern. I break it down and go over how to get the right sound for this particular song. Next we learn the riff and then glue everything together and try it out nice and slow.

Following that, we learn the second part, which requires 2 more chord shapes: Bm7 and G. They’re also a bit different than you’d expect, but still not too hard to play.

After trying the second part, we put it together with the first, and that’s the whole song!

This one is ALL ABOUT THE DETAILS. Be sure to take it nice and slow, follow my advice, practice it in the same order that I show you, and you’ll have this together in no time!

Enjoy the lesson!
-James
